Milan is the second-largest city in Italy after Rome, serving as the administrative center of the Lombardy region and the province of Milan. With a population of over 1.3 million and an area of 182 km² (70.3 sq mi), Milan is the largest city in northern Italy and the hub of the country’s largest metropolitan area. It is also a major financial center in Italy, holding the status of the nation’s financial and economic capital.

Milan is also renowned as a global fashion capital and one of the most significant tourist destinations not only in Italy but in all of Europe. The city has a rich history dating back to the Roman Empire and is well known for iconic landmarks such as the Milan Cathedral (Italian: Duomo di Milano) and the Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie, home to Leonardo da Vinci’s “The Last Supper.”

Milan is located on a plain in northwestern Italy, approximately 135 km (84 miles) northeast of Turin and 150 km (93 miles) north of Genoa. The climate in this region is humid subtropical with some continental features. Summers are humid and hot, while winters are wet and cold. Winter temperatures can drop as low as -17°C (1.4°F), and the city often experiences snowfall.
