Messina is the third-largest city on the island of Sicily, after Palermo and Catania, and is one of Italy’s most important military and commercial seaports. It is the capital of the Italian Metropolitan City of Messina within the Sicily region. The city covers an area of 213.75 square kilometers (82.52 square miles) and has a population exceeding 231,000 people.

Messina is located at the northeastern tip of Sicily, along the western shore of the Strait of Messina, which connects the Ionian and Tyrrhenian Seas. The base of Mount Etna is approximately 70 kilometers (43.5 miles) southwest of the city, while Catania, the second-largest city in Sicily, is 95 kilometers (59 miles) to the south. Messina stretches along the Strait of Messina for more than 30 kilometers (18.6 miles).

The city’s most notable attractions include the Messina Cathedral, the Cathedral’s Bell Tower with its astronomical clock, the Church of the Annunciation, the Temple of Christ, the Fountain of Neptune, the Basilica of Saint Francis, and Faro di Capo Peloro Beach. As a major agricultural hub in Sicily, Messina’s local markets offer a variety of fresh produce, including lemons, oranges, tangerines, grapes, olives, and olive oil, all at attractive prices.
