Erfurt is the capital and largest city of the German federal state of Thuringia. It is located on both banks of the Gera River in Central Germany, 110 km southwest of Leipzig, 288 km southwest of Berlin, and 440 km north of Munich. Erfurt is one of the oldest cities in the country, with the first mention of the city dating back to 742. In 1392, one of the oldest universities in Germany, now known as the University of Erfurt, was founded here. The city is home to more than 214 thousand people and covers an area of 270 km².
St Severus’ Church (German: Severikirche), located near Erfurt Cathedral, is considered one of the most unique Gothic churches in Germany due to its unusual architecture. The Erfurt Cathedral, together with St. Severi Catholic Church, forms a unique architectural ensemble and is a landmark of the city. At night, this ensemble is beautifully illuminated with modern lighting.
Behind the architectural ensemble is Cathedral Square (Domplatz), which is the heart of Erfurt’s Old Town (Altstadt). The square is the venue for fairs and markets, where you can buy the freshest and highest-quality products from local farmers. The square also hosts concerts, music festivals, as well as social and festive events. A Ferris wheel is periodically installed on Cathedral Square.
