Erice is a small historic town located 750 meters (2,460 feet) above sea level in the province of Trapani, in the northwest of Sicily, 6.5 kilometers (about 4 miles) northeast of Trapani. The town covers an area of 47 square kilometers and has a population of approximately 28,000 people. Until 1934, Erice was known as Monte San Giuliano, but it was renamed after the ancient Greek name of the area—Eryx (Greek: Έρυξ), where it is situated.
Piazza della Loggia is one of the central squares in Erice, located in the heart of the town. The square is home to the town hall, several shops, a pizzeria, and a shopping center. Piazza della Loggia also serves as a venue for various cultural events and festivals, especially during the summer season.
