Zell am See is a picturesque alpine town located in the federal state of Salzburg, Austria, situated at an elevation of 750 meters (2,460 feet) above sea level. The town lies on the western shore of Lake Zell (Zeller See), approximately 80 kilometers (50 miles) south of Salzburg and about 140 kilometers (87 miles) east of Innsbruck. Surrounded by the mountains of the Kitzbühel Alps, it is one of the country’s most popular year-round tourist destinations, attracting visitors with its natural beauty, well-developed infrastructure, and wide range of outdoor activities. Zell am See has a population of approximately 10,231 residents and covers an area of 55.17 square kilometers (21.3 square miles).

Zell am See is part of the “Zell am See-Kaprun” ski region, offering slopes of various difficulty levels with a total length of 138 kilometers (86 miles), as well as snow parks, freeride trails, and night skiing runs. The ski area is served by 53 cable cars and lifts. The climate in Zell am See is moderately alpine, characterized by cold, snowy winters and cool summers. The average temperature in January is around -4 °C (25 °F), while in July it averages about +18 °C (64 °F). The town receives approximately 1,100 millimeters (43 inches) of precipitation annually, much of it falling as snow during the winter months.

Zell am See boasts a well-developed tourism infrastructure, offering a wide range of accommodations, from luxury hotels to cozy guesthouses. The town is known for its spa centers, including the renowned Tauern Spa, as well as for its restaurants serving traditional Austrian cuisine and a variety of shops. Throughout the year, Zell am See hosts numerous cultural events such as music festivals and sporting competitions. Ski schools and cable car stations are conveniently located within the town, providing easy access to the surrounding ski slopes.

Among the main attractions of Zell am See are Lake Zell (German: Zeller See), a popular spot for swimming, boating, fishing, and lakeside strolls; Schmittenhöhe Mountain, which offers more than 77 kilometers (48 miles) of ski slopes in winter and numerous hiking and biking trails in summer; the Kitzsteinhorn Glacier, which provides year-round skiing and snowboarding opportunities; and the Hohe Tauern National Park, one of the largest nature reserves in Europe, offering extensive possibilities for eco-tourism.
