Ghent is the capital and largest city of the province of East Flanders, as well as one of the oldest and most significant cities in Belgium. It is located at the confluence of the Lys (Leie) and Scheldt (Schelde) rivers, approximately 55 kilometers (about 34 miles) northwest of Brussels. Covering an area of around 156.18 square kilometers (about 60.29 square miles), Ghent has a population of approximately 260,000, making it the second-largest city in Belgium after Brussels.
Ghent is renowned for its rich history, stunning architecture, and strong cultural traditions. Its origins date back to Roman times, when it was known as Gandum. During the Middle Ages, Ghent became a major commercial and economic hub due to its strategic location. The city was particularly famous for its textile production and was one of Europe’s leading cloth-producing centers in the 13th and 14th centuries.
Today, Ghent is celebrated for its well-preserved historic buildings and landmarks. Notable sites include the Gravensteen Castle (Castle of the Counts), built in the 13th century; the Ghent City Hall (Stadhuis van Gent); St. Bavo’s Cathedral (Sint-Baafskathedraal); and the St. Michael’s Bridge (Sint-Michielsbrug), which offers breathtaking views of the old town and the rivers Lys and Scheldt.
