Sankt Peter-Freienstein is a picturesque municipality located in the federal state of Styria in central Austria. It nestled at an elevation of approximately 600 meters (1,970 feet) above sea level, it lies about 74 kilometers (46 miles) north of Graz and 160 kilometers (99 miles) southwest of Vienna. Surrounded by forests and mountains, the area is especially attractive to nature lovers and those seeking outdoor recreation. As of January 1, 2024, the municipality has a population of approximately 2,320 residents and covers an area of 27 square kilometers (10.4 square miles).

The history of this region stretches back centuries. A fortress once stood at the site of the current municipality, first mentioned in historical records in the year 1122. Later, in 1497, the Late Gothic parish church of Saint Peter was constructed. In 1648, construction began on the pilgrimage church of Maria Freienstein, built on the site of the old fortress and completed in 1718. These historical landmarks remain as enduring symbols of the region’s rich cultural heritage.

Sankt Peter-Freienstein offers a wide variety of activities for outdoor enthusiasts, including hiking and walking trails through beautiful natural surroundings, as well as cycling routes of varying difficulty levels. Among the main attractions are the pilgrimage church of Maria Freienstein, the 15th-century parish church of Saint Peter, and Friedhofen Castle, which today houses a museum dedicated to the region’s mining history.
