Sankt Peter-Freienstein is a picturesque municipality located in the federal state of Styria in central Austria. It nestled at an elevation of approximately 600 meters (1,970 feet) above sea level, it lies about 74 kilometers (46 miles) north of Graz and 160 kilometers (99 miles) southwest of Vienna. In 1648, construction began on the pilgrimage church of Maria Freienstein, built on the site of the old fortress and completed in 1718.
