Messina is the third-largest city on the island of Sicily after Palermo and Catania. It is the capital of the province of Messina in the Sicily region, and one of Italy’s most important military and commercial ports. It covers an area of 214 square kilometers (83 square miles) and has a population of over 231,000 people. Messina is situated on the eastern shore of the Strait of Messina in northeastern Sicily, 90 kilometers (56 miles) northeast of Mount Etna and 95 kilometers (59 miles) north of Catania. The city stretches along the eastern coast of the Strait of Messina and the Ionian Sea for more than 30 kilometers (19 miles).
Messina has ferry connections to the cities of Villa San Giovanni and Reggio Calabria in the Calabria region on the mainland of Italy, located on the opposite, right-hand shore of the Strait of Messina. The city’s proximity to mainland Italy makes it one of the country’s most crucial seaports. The Strait of Messina connects the Ionian Sea with the Tyrrhenian Sea and flows between the eastern shore of Sicily and the southwestern coast of the Apennine Peninsula. The strait is approximately 33 kilometers (20.5 miles) long, with a width varying from 3 to 22 kilometers (1.9 to 13.7 miles).
