Piazza IX Aprile is one of the largest and most famous squares in Taormina, located near the historic part of the city and its medieval gates. The square was named in honor of the events of April 9, 1860, when rumors spread through the city that Giuseppe Garibaldi had arrived to liberate Sicily from the Bourbon dynasty. Before this, it was known as Piazza Sant’Agostino, named after the 15th-century Church of Saint Augustine, which still stands on the square and remains one of its main attractions.

In addition to the Church of Saint Augustine, the square is home to the Church of San Giuseppe, built in the 17th century, and an ancient chapel dating back to the 12th century. One of the highlights of Piazza IX Aprile is its scenic terrace, offering panoramic views of the city, the majestic Mount Etna, and the beautiful Ionian Sea. The square is often referred to as the “living room” of Taormina due to its vibrant atmosphere, where locals and visitors alike gather to enjoy the stunning surroundings, including the picturesque Clock Tower (Torre dell’Orologio), which dates back to the 12th century but was later reconstructed in the 17th century.
