Piazza Venezia is one of the main squares in Rome. It is located in the very center of the city at the foot of Capitoline Hill, near the Roman Forum. The square is named after the Palazzo Venezia, built in the 15th century by Venetian Cardinal Pietro Barbo, who later became Pope Paul II. The palace housed the embassy of the Venetian Republic. In 1660, the Palazzo D’Aste was built on the square, later renamed Palazzo Bonaparte. The square took on its current appearance in 1885 with the construction of the Altare della Patria, or Vittoriano, a monument dedicated to the first king of unified Italy, Victor Emmanuel II, located here in Piazza Venezia.
