Leutasch (German: Leutasch) is a picturesque municipality located in the federal state of Tyrol in western Austria, within the Innsbruck-Land District. It has a population of 2,419 and covers an area of 103.1 square kilometers (about 39.8 square miles). The village is situated in the high-altitude Leutasch Valley (Leutaschtal) at approximately 1,136 meters (3,727 feet) above sea level, about 8 kilometers (5 miles) northwest of the prestigious and well-known ski resort of Seefeld. The valley is bordered to the south by the Hohe Munde massif and to the north by the peaks of Hoher Wann, Dreitorspitze, and Arnspitze. The Leutascher Ache River runs through the valley, and its western part connects to the Gaistal Valley, leading toward the Ehrwalder Alm.
The climate here is alpine, characterized by snowy winters with abundant snowfall and mild, sunny summers. The Leutasch Valley is well protected from cold northern winds, making it an attractive destination for year-round tourism. The average annual temperature in Leutasch is about +14 °C (57 °F). In winter, nighttime temperatures can drop to around -6 °C (21 °F), while in summer, daytime highs often reach 23 °C (73 °F). The region receives approximately 1,058 millimeters (about 41.7 inches) of precipitation annually, with about 373 centimeters (about 147 inches) falling as snow.
Leutasch’s economy is focused on eco-friendly and peaceful tourism. The village offers hotels, restaurants, shops, and artisan workshops producing traditional crafts. In winter, visitors can enjoy approximately 279 kilometers (about 173 miles) of cross-country skiing trails, as well as downhill skiing on Mount Katzenkopf (1,360 meters / 4,462 feet) with available ski lifts. Notable attractions in the municipality include the Leutaschklamm Gorge, also known as the “Geisterklamm” (“Ghost Gorge”), and the Ganghofer Museum, dedicated to the writer Ludwig Ganghofer, who frequently visited Leutasch. The community is also home to two parish churches — St. Mary Magdalene in Oberleutasch and St. John the Baptist in Unterleutasch — along with about 20 chapels spread throughout the area.
