Lake Achensee — is the largest lake in the Austrian state of Tyrol and one of the most stunning lakes not only in the region but in all of Austria. Nestled among towering mountain peaks that reach up to 2,000 meters (6,562 feet), it lies in the western part of the country, about 54 kilometers (34 miles) northeast of Innsbruck. The lake reaches a depth of 133 meters (436 feet), stretches 8 kilometers (5 miles) in length, and varies in width from 1 to 2 kilometers (0.6 to 1.2 miles).

Throughout the year, the water temperature rarely exceeds 20°C (68°F). The lake is known for its vibrant turquoise-blue water and remarkable clarity, making it a popular destination for water sports such as swimming, sailing, and kayaking. Lake Achensee is situated between the Karwendel and Rofan mountain ranges, in the heart of the Austrian Alps. This area is part of the Karwendel Nature Park, one of Austria’s largest protected natural reserves.

Pertisau is a charming alpine village located on the western shore of Lake Achensee, at an elevation of approximately 950 meters (3,117 feet) above sea level. The village was first mentioned in documents dating back to the early 12th century, though it began to develop as a resort in the 19th century. Its breathtaking scenery and tranquil atmosphere began attracting visitors, and with the arrival of the Tyrolean railway in 1889, the area’s popularity among tourists increased significantly.

In the past, the local population mainly relied on farming and fishing, but today tourism is the region’s primary source of income. Pertisau now offers a wide range of accommodations — from luxurious lake-view hotels to cozy family-run guesthouses. Local restaurants are known for their traditional Tyrolean cuisine, featuring freshly caught fish from Lake Achensee and regional meat specialties. The area is renowned for its magnificent natural beauty and offers year-round opportunities for outdoor recreation.

During the summer months, visitors enjoy scenic lakeside walks, mountain hikes, cycling, and a variety of water sports such as sailing and windsurfing — all made possible by the region’s steady alpine breezes. The Karwendel and Rofan mountains offer numerous hiking trails, ranging from gentle lakeside strolls to more challenging alpine routes. One of the most famous trails is the hike through the Wolfsklamm Gorge, which winds through waterfalls and dense forests. Cycling paths around the lake and through the Karwendel Nature Park cater to both beginners and seasoned riders.

In winter, Pertisau becomes a paradise for cross-country skiing, offering around 200 kilometers (124 miles) of groomed trails, including routes through the Karwendel Nature Park. For downhill ski enthusiasts, nearby resorts like Rofan and Christlum provide well-maintained slopes. Sledding and snowshoeing through quiet, snow-covered forests are also popular winter activities.
