Campo de’ Fiori Square is one of the most beautiful squares in Rome located in the center of the Italian capital between Piazza Navona and Palazzo Farnese. This historic square was established in the early 14th century, and its name translates from Italian as ‘Field of Flowers’ because this area was once a meadow full of flowers.
The square has a rich history and has served as a site for horse races, public executions, and markets. One of the most notable events in the square was the execution of the philosopher Giordano Bruno, who was burned at the stake in 1600 for his radical ideas about the universe. In 1888, a statue of the philosopher was erected in the center of the square to commemorate this event. Today, Campo de’ Fiori is known for its lively market, which operates Monday through Saturday from 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM. It is also one of the hubs of Rome’s nightlife with bars and clubs.
From the square begins Via Giulia, considered one of the most beautiful streets in Rome. The square has a rectangular shape, and it houses the Palazzo della Cancelleria, built by Donato Bramante—an architect of the High Renaissance, who designed St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City.
