The Palermo Cathedral, officially known as the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, is located in the city of Palermo on the island of Sicily. This cathedral is the main church of Palermo and stands as one of the most important historical and architectural landmarks in the city.
The construction of the cathedral took place from 1179 to 1801, undergoing several renovations between the 12th and 18th centuries. As a result of these multiple reconstructions, the cathedral showcases a unique blend of architectural styles, including Arab-Norman, Gothic, and Neoclassical elements.
The Palermo Cathedral is the resting place of the relics of Saint Rosalia, the city’s patron saint, as well as the burial site of several great Sicilian kings and German emperors, under whose reign Sicily experienced significant development. In 2015, the cathedral was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. Located in the heart of Palermo on Piazza del Duomo (Cathedral Square), it remains a vital cultural and religious center of the city.
