Piazza della Borsa is a historic square and one of the economic centers of Trieste, surrounded by beautiful classical-style buildings. Originally known as Piazza della Dogana, it was renamed in the early 19th century following the construction of the Old Stock Exchange (Borsa Vecchia) building. Completed in 1806 in a neoclassical style by architect Antonio Mollari, the Old Stock Exchange once served as the hub of Trieste’s commercial activity. Today, it houses the city’s Chamber of Commerce.
Piazza della Borsa is home to several significant historical buildings and architectural landmarks, including Casa Bartoli, designed in Art Nouveau style by architect Max Fabiani in 1905, and Tergesteo Palace (1842), which features a covered gallery connecting the square to Giuseppe Verdi Square, where the city’s opera house is located. The square is also distinguished by the Column of Leopold I of Austria, relocated here in 1808. Originally positioned in Piazza Pozzo del Mare, the column commemorates the establishment of Trieste as a free port by Charles VI, Leopold’s son. Today, Piazza della Borsa is a popular tourist destination in Trieste, blending historical charm with modern vibrancy.
