Porvoo is a small city and municipality located in southern Finland, 50 kilometers east of Helsinki. It is one of the oldest cities in Finland, the first mention of the city dates back to the XIV century chronicles. The name of the city comes from the Swedish fortress located on the small river Porvonjoki, which flows through the city.
The central square (Market Square) of Porvoo is located in the center of the Old Town and it houses the Old Town Hall built in 1764. Today the Old Town Hall is home an art gallery and a museum. The Market Square is one of the main attractions of Porvoo, where the city’s fairs, including Christmas fairs, are held.
