Piazza della Signoria is one of the most iconic and historic squares in Florence, serving as the center of public and political life during the era of the Florentine Republic. The square is L-shaped and is renowned for its impressive collection of outdoor sculptures. Among these statues is the famous “Perseus with the Head of Medusa,” created by Benvenuto Cellini in the 16th century. The square also features a loggia (Loggia dei Lanzi) with 15 statues, including a 4-meter-tall (13-foot) statue of David, crafted by Michelangelo in 1504. This sculptural walkway inspired rulers as they made their way to the palace to achieve new feats. Additionally, the square is home to an equestrian statue of Duke Cosimo I de’ Medici.

The dominant architectural feature of the square is the imposing Palazzo Vecchio, which served as the seat of government during the Florentine Republic. Today, Palazzo Vecchio remains the city hall and a symbol of Florence’s rich heritage. In the center of the square stands the Fountain of Neptune, featuring a majestic white marble figure of Neptune, riding a chariot drawn by four sea horses. The fountain was created by Bartolomeo Ammannati in the 16th century as a symbol of Florence’s naval ambitions and also served as a source of fresh water for the city’s residents.
