Szentendre Market Square Live Webcam, Hungary
The real-time webcam shows the Market Square of the city of Szentendre, Hungary.
Szentendre is a picturesque town on the right bank of the Danube River, located just 12 miles (20 km) north of Budapest. It is known as the “city of artists”: since the early 20th century, Hungarian painters, sculptors, and craftspeople have settled here, turning Szentendre into one of Hungary’s main artistic colonies. In the 17th–18th centuries, the town was actively settled by Serbian refugees fleeing Ottoman rule, which shaped its unique architectural character with numerous Orthodox churches.
The heart of the Old Town is Market Square (Fő tér) — a cobblestone pedestrian zone surrounded by Baroque-style buildings with bright facades. Here you will find cafes, restaurants, souvenir shops, and art galleries. In the center of the square stands a Baroque memorial cross (a plague column), erected in 1736 in memory of the victims of the plague epidemic. Picturesque narrow streets lead from the square to the Danube embankment and lookout points. During the summer, colorful umbrellas are often hung above nearby Bercsényi Street, creating a festive atmosphere.
The main architectural landmark of the square is the Annunciation Orthodox Church (Blagovestenska Church), built in 1752. This Baroque-Rococo style church with elegant windows was built by Serbian settlers. Inside, unique frescoes, icons, and a magnificent carved iconostasis have been preserved. The Serbian Orthodox Church Museum operates next to the church. Opening hours: Sunday from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, admission is approximately 400 forints (about $1.10 USD). Important: the museum and church are closed on Mondays. Nearby the square are the Town Hall and the Church of St. John the Baptist (13th century), also known as the Castle Church.
