Budapest Zoo Live Webcam, Elephants
The live webcam shows the elephant enclosure at the Budapest Zoo in Hungary.
The Budapest Zoo & Botanical Garden is one of the oldest zoos in the world, founded in 1866. Elephants have been part of its history for nearly 150 years: the first elephant arrived here as early as the 1870s, and for almost 130 years, only Asian elephants (Elephas maximus) have been kept here. Today, the zoo is home to a male named Assam (since 2009), a female named Angela (since 2010), and their younger son, Samu, born on April 24, 2021. Samu’s older brother, Arun, moved to the Szeged Zoo in 2023. The Budapest Zoo is located in City Park (Városliget) in central Budapest and covers an area of approximately 30 acres (12 hectares).
The elephant enclosure is located in the famous Elephant House, built between 1909 and 1912 according to a design by architect Kornél Neuschloss. This building is an important monument of Hungarian Art Nouveau (Secession style). Its facade is decorated with the renowned Zsolnay ceramic tiles. In 1915, the minaret-like tower was demolished for political reasons but was restored during renovations in 1997–1999 and now serves as an observation deck. The modern enclosure includes a spacious outdoor area with a sandy surface, pools, and bathing zones. As part of the “Pannonian Park” project, a new, state-of-the-art complex with a separate birthing wing will be built for the elephants.
