The Teresa Meadow (German: Theresienwiese) is Munich’s largest festival, celebration and entertainment venue, covering an area of 42 hectares. Theresienwiese is located in the district of Ludwigsvorstadt-Isarvorstadt, southwest of the central district of Altstadt, south of the Main Railway Station, and 2 southwest of Marienplatz.
Theresienwiese is the site of the world famous Oktoberfest, which is approximately 6 million people from Germany and around the world. The square was named after Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen, wife of the King of Bavaria of Ludwig I. The first time of the Oktoberfest celebration was held on October 12, 1810 in honor of the their wedding.
Since 1872, the festival has been held in September. Oktoberfest begins on Saturday and lasts several days. In the southwestern part of the Theresienwiese Meadow stands a huge bronze statue of Bavaria, unveiled on August 7, 1850. Its height is 18.52 meters and its weight is 87.36 tons. At the head of the statue there is an observation deck with a view of the entire The Teresa Meadow and the city of Munich. The observation deck can be reached by a spiral staircase with 66 steps.
