Oudenaarde (Dutch: Oudenaarde, French: Audenarde) is a small historic city located in the province of East Flanders, in northwestern Belgium. It lies along the banks of the River Scheldt, approximately 30 kilometers (about 19 miles) south of Ghent, the provincial capital. The city covers an area of around 68 square kilometers (about 26 square miles) and has a population of approximately 31,000 residents.

Oudenaarde boasts a rich history dating back to the Middle Ages, when it became a major center of the textile industry and a strategic stronghold in the region. The city is known for its architectural landmarks and cultural traditions, and it serves as a gateway for many tourist routes through the Flemish Ardennes—a scenic, hilly region that is especially popular among cyclists. Oudenaarde also plays a significant role in the world-famous cycling race, the Tour of Flanders.

The city’s golden age came during the 15th and 16th centuries, when it flourished as a hub for tapestry and textile production, with goods highly sought after across Europe. Many of Oudenaarde’s most iconic buildings were constructed during this time, including the grand Town Hall and several historic churches. The city is home to several museums dedicated to textiles, local history, and art. It is also an important cultural center, hosting festivals and events that celebrate Flemish traditions and heritage.

At the heart of the city lies the Markt, or Market Square—Oudenaarde’s central plaza and the focal point of its historical and architectural treasures. Key landmarks on the square include the Town Hall of Oudenaarde (Stadhuis van Oudenaarde), built in the Brabantine Gothic style between 1526 and 1537, and the Church of Saint Walburga (Sint-Walburgakerk), which dates back to the 13th century. The square also features ornate fountains, monuments, and statues commemorating important events and figures from the city’s past.

Beyond its architectural beauty, the Market Square serves as a vibrant public gathering space. It regularly hosts city festivals, concerts, open-air markets, and exhibitions that draw both locals and visitors. One of the most anticipated events is the annual fair, where visitors can buy regional foods and artisanal products.
