Portovenere is a picturesque coastal town in the province of La Spezia in the Liguria region of northwestern Italy. It is located on a peninsula at the southern end of the Bay of Poets on the Ligurian Sea, approximately 15 kilometers (9 miles) from La Spezia and 100 kilometers (62 miles) from Genoa. The town’s name, meaning “Port of Venus” or “Harbor of Venus,” derives from an ancient temple dedicated to the Roman goddess of love that once stood here. Portovenere consists of three villages: Fezzano, Le Grazie, and Portovenere itself. It also includes three islands: Palmaria, Tino, and Tinetto.

Portovenere has a rich history dating back to Roman times. The town is known for its well-preserved medieval architecture. The main attractions of Portovenere include: the Church of St. Peter (Chiesa di San Pietro) in Gothic style; San Lorenzo Church (Chiesa di San Lorenzo), a Romanesque church from the 12th century; Byron’s Grotto (Grotta di Byron); and Doria Castle, built by the influential Doria family from Genoa between the 12th and 16th centuries. Palmaria Island, the largest of the three islands, is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
