De Panne is a small coastal town and municipality in the province of West Flanders in northwestern Belgium. It lies along the North Sea and borders France, making it the southernmost seaside resort and the westernmost point of Belgium. The town has a population of approximately 11,000 and covers an area of 23.9 square kilometers (about 9.2 square miles). The name De Panne translates from Dutch as “lowland in the dunes,” and the town is home to about one-third of all the dunes along the Belgian North Sea coast. The surrounding area includes several nature reserves, such as De Westhoek, Houtsaegerduinen, Kerkepannebos, and Oosthoek.
Tourism is the main economic driver of De Panne. After World War II, the town became a popular holiday destination, attracting visitors with its wide beaches, natural attractions, and amusement park. The town’s main points of interest include: De Panne Beach, the widest beach in Belgium, Plopsaland De Panne, the largest theme park in the country, Westhoek Nature Reserve, one of the oldest dune landscapes in Europe, ideal for nature walks, Dumontwijk, a historic neighborhood known for its Art Nouveau and Art Deco architecture, as well as The Monument to Leopold I, honoring Belgium’s first king, who entered the country through De Panne.
