Genoa is the sixth-largest city in Italy and the center of the Liguria region, the largest seaport in Italy, and the center of the Greater Genoa metropolitan area. It has a population of approximately 580,000 people, and the population of the Greater Genoa metropolitan area more than 1.5 million people.

The city is located on the shore of the Gulf of Genoa in the Ligurian Sea in northwestern Italy, 148 kilometers (92 miles) south of Milan, 160 kilometers (99 miles) southeast of Turin, and 98 kilometers (61 miles) northwest of La Spezia. In the past, Genoa was the capital of the powerful and wealthy Genoese Republic, which is why there are a large number of historical and architectural monuments here. The historic center of the city is one of the largest among all European cities.
