Kortrijk is a historic city located in the province of West Flanders in Belgium. It lies at the confluence of the Leie–Scheldt Canal and the Leie River in the northwest of the country, near the border with France. The city is situated approximately 25 kilometers (about 15.5 miles) southwest of Ghent and 90 kilometers (around 56 miles) west of Brussels. Kortrijk has a population of about 79,000 people and covers an area of 80.89 square kilometers (31.24 square miles).
Kortrijk is one of the oldest cities in Belgium, known in ancient times as Cortoriacum. It was founded by the Romans as a settlement on a bend of the Leie River. During the Middle Ages, it became an important center of the textile industry, especially known for its linen production. Over the centuries, Kortrijk suffered extensive damage during various wars, including both World Wars. In 1944, the city was heavily bombed, resulting in the destruction of many historic buildings.
Despite this, Kortrijk has preserved many architectural and historical landmarks. Notable among them are: The Main Square (Grote Markt), The Town Hall (Stadhuis) on the Main Square, The Belfry (Belfort), a UNESCO World Heritage Site, The Broel Towers (Broeltorens), and The Beguinage (Begijnhof) — a historic complex of houses and chapels founded in the 13th century, once home to beguines, religious women who lived in a semi-monastic community.
