Ballito is a small resort town located on the Indian Ocean coast in the KwaZulu-Natal province, in the northeast of South Africa. It lies about 600 km (373 miles) southeast of Johannesburg and 40 km (25 miles) north of Durban. Founded in 1954, Ballito has grown into one of South Africa’s most popular holiday destinations, offering numerous restaurants, bars, cafés, shops, and hotels.

Stretching along 2.5 kilometers (1.5 miles) of the Indian Ocean coastline, Ballito boasts beautiful sandy beaches that attract both international visitors and local residents. Popular activities include surfing, windsurfing, and fishing. Ballito is also famous for frequent dolphin sightings along its shores, earning it the nickname “Dolphin Coast.”

The climate in Ballito is humid subtropical (classified as Cfa under the Köppen system), with mild winters and warm summers. The average annual temperature is around 20.7 °C (69 °F). The hottest months are December through February, when daytime highs reach 24–26 °C (75–79 °F). The coolest months are June and July, with nighttime temperatures dropping to 12–14 °C (54–57 °F). Rainfall occurs throughout the year—about 1,010 mm (40 in) annually—with the wettest months in November and December and the driest period in June. The ocean water stays pleasantly warm year-round, especially in summer.
