Tembe Elephant Park is a protected area located in the KwaZulu-Natal province in northeastern South Africa. The park lies in the northeastern corner of the province, west of the border with Mozambique, approximately 400 kilometers (250 miles) north of Durban. Covering around 30,000 hectares (β‰ˆ300 kmΒ²), it borders other protected areas in the region. Tembe is renowned for its high density of large elephants, including a population of β€œbig tuskers” β€” males with exceptionally long and massive tusks.

The park is home to roughly 300 elephants, along with numerous other African species, including lions, leopards, hippos, crocodiles, antelopes, hyenas, giraffes, and more. Tembe encompasses sand forests, savanna, and wetland habitats, creating a unique ecosystem with a high level of biodiversity. Over 300 bird species have been recorded here, and the park is recognized for its outstanding biodiversity within the Maputaland region. Tembe plays a crucial role in conserving the rare big tuskers and the unique sand forest ecosystems of Maputaland.

Visitors can explore the park through safari tours, scenic routes, and the Tembe Elephant Lodge, which offers an unforgettable experience surrounded by nature and wildlife. Activities include elephant viewing at waterholes, walking safaris, and photographic safaris. Visits often require advance booking and guided supervision. International and regional conservation programs, including partnerships with NGOs and wildlife foundations, support the monitoring and protection of the park.
