Punta Arenas is a city and the administrative center of the Magallanes Province in southern Chile. It is located on the Brunswick Peninsula on the coast of the Strait of Magellan. It is the southernmost city on Earth with a population of over 100,000 people and the southernmost city in South America. Cape Froward, the southernmost point of continental South America, is located 100 km south of the city. The city covers an area of about 17,846 km², with a population of around 131,000 people. The name Punta Arenas translates from Spanish as ‘sandy point.’ The climate here is cool maritime, with cool, humid summers and moderately cold, wet winters. Today, Punta Arenas is one of the economic centers of Chile, with its economy based on oil and gas extraction, fishing, and tourism.
