The Very Large Telescope (VLT) is a big complex of optical telescopes at Paranal Observatory located at an altitude of 2635 m above sea level at the top of Cerro Paranal Mountain in the Atacama Desert of northern Chile. It is the largest optical telescope on Earth in terms of total mirror area and provides the highest resolution in the world. The VLT consists of 4 separate telescopes with a mirror diameter of 8.2 meters and 4 auxiliary telescopes with a mirror diameter of 1.8 meters, combined into one optical system. The Very Large Telescope can operate as 4 separate telescopes or as a single optical system that matches telescopes with a main mirror diameter of 16 m.
