Santiago is the capital and largest city of Chile. Santiago is one of the largest cities in South America, with an area of 641 km², and it is home to more than 5 million people. The city was founded in 1541 by the Spanish conquistador Pedro de Valdivia and named after Saint James. Santiago has a Mediterranean climate with long dry summers and rainy winters. San Cristobal Hill (Spanish: Cerro San Cristobal) is located in the northern part of Santiago. Its height is 850 m above sea level and it rises 300 m above the city. At the top of San Cristobal Hill, there is a temple with a 22-meter statue of the Virgin Mary and an observation deck with a great panorama overlooking the capital of Chile. You can go up San Cristobal Hill on foot, by car, or by funicular.
