The Cathedral Basilica of the National Shrine of Our Lady Aparecida (Portuguese: Catedral Basílica do Santuário Nacional de Nossa Senhora Aparecida) is a large Roman Catholic basilica in honor of Our Lady of Aparecida in the city of Aparecida, the State of Sao Paulo, Brazil. It is the main temple in Brazil and the second largest Catholic church in the world after Saint Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican. Its construction began on November 11, 1955, and was consecrated on July 4, 1980. The temple was built in the form of a Greek Cross designed by the architect Benedito Calixto Neto. The Roman Catholic basilica is 188 m long, 183 m wide and 109 m high. The basilica can accommodate up to 45,000 people. The Cathedral Basilica of the National Shrine of Our Lady Aparecida is one of the main centers of pilgrimage in Latin America.
