Puebla, or also Puebla de Zaragoza, is the capital and largest city of the state of Puebla in Central Mexico. The area of the city is 546 km², it is home to about 1.5 million people. Puebla forms the Metropolitan area of Puebla, or Greater Puebla, which is fourth largest metropolitan area in Mexico after Mexico City, Guadalajara and Monterrey with a population more than 2.6 million. The city is located at an altitude of about 2 km above sea level in Central Mexico, 130 km southeast of Mexico City, in the Puebla Valley, surrounded on all sides by the mountains and volcanoes of the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt, also known as the Sierra Nevada. Puebla is the only city in the world surrounded on all sides by volcanoes, among them the Popocatepetl volcano with a height of 5,426 meters (17,802 ft) above sea level, Iztaccihuatl with a 5,230 m (17,160 ft), Malinche volcano with 4,461 metres (14,636 ft), and Orizaba Peak with 5,636 metres (18,491 ft). Puebla is one of the main economic centers of Mexico with food, textile, footwear, metallurgy and chemical industries. Tourism plays an important role in Puebla’s economy; museums and galleries, cathedrals and churches, as well as great local cuisine attract many tourists around all the world. Puebla is 4th largest city of Mexico and one the oldest city in the country. The city was chosen as a UNESCO World Heritage Site thanks to the best preserved its colonial architecture.
