Aberdare National Park, located in central Kenya within the Aberdare Range east of the Great Rift Valley, was established in 1950 and covers approximately 767 kmΒ² under the management of the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS). The park encompasses the highlands of the Aberdare Mountains, with elevations ranging from 1,952 meters to around 3,900 meters, including the range’s highest peaks. Due to this significant variation in altitude, the climate is highly diverse, featuring cool, misty conditions with high humidity and heavy rainfall. Temperatures are moderate throughout the year, while nighttime frost can occur at the highest elevations.

Aberdare is a mosaic of highland ecosystems, including alpine moorlands, bamboo forests, tropical montane rainforests, and deep valleys. This variety of habitats supports rich biodiversity, including rare plant and animal species. The park is home to African elephants, leopards, buffaloes, giant forest hogs, various antelopes, numerous primates, and black rhinos. Natural highlights include Karuru Falls and Gura Falls, as well as numerous rivers and streams.

Aberdare also has historical significance: it was home to the legendary Treetops lodge, where the future Queen Elizabeth II learned of her accession to the throne in 1952. Today, the park features modern lodges and unique viewing platforms, such as The Ark, catering to safari enthusiasts, bird watchers, and trekking visitors. The park is located roughly 100 km north of Nairobi, with the nearest major towns being Nyeri and Nanyuki. Access is provided via road and guided tour operators, with lodges and wildlife viewing platforms available within the park for observing animals at watering holes.
