Kingisepp is a small town and the administrative center of Kingisepp district in the Leningrad region of Russia. It is located on the right bank of the Luga River, 100 km southeast of Gatchina and 135 km southeast of St. Petersburg. The city has a population of about 50 thousand people and an area of 44 km². Kingisepp is the ninth largest city in the Leningrad Region after Murino, Gatchina, Vsevolozhsk, Vyborg, Sertolovo, Kudrovo, Tikhvin and Kirishi.

Kingisepp is one of the oldest towns in the Leningrad Region. According to historians, it was founded in 1384 and was called Yam or Yamgorod. In 1703, by decree of the Russian Tsar Peter I, it was renamed Yamburg. After the October Revolution, the Soviet authorities renamed Yamburg to Kingisepp in 1922, in honor of the Estonian revolutionary Viktor Kingisepp.
