The Southern Fuegian Railway, also known as the ‘Ferrocarril Austral Fueguino’ or the ‘Train of the End of the World,’ holds the distinction of being the southernmost functioning railway on Earth. This historic railway traverses the picturesque landscape of the Tierra del Fuego Province in southern Argentina.
Constructed between 1902 and 1909, this railway was originally laid with wooden tracks to transport construction materials for the establishment of a penal colony in Ushuaia. Back then, it was famously referred to as the ‘Train of the Prisoners,’ as it served to link the penal colony with the timber industry and the burgeoning city of Ushuaia.
In 1994, the railway underwent a transformation, shifting its focus to become a captivating tourist attraction that now connects Ushuaia to the stunning Tierra del Fuego National Park. Remarkably, it remains one of the rare railways globally where antique steam locomotives continue to chug along the tracks.
These locomotives have carriages that double as restaurants, offering a diverse menu of Argentine cuisine, along with tea, coffee, and champagne to passengers. The journey of the ‘Train of the End of the World’ commences approximately 10 kilometers from Ushuaia International Airport and meanders through the breathtaking Pico Valley, nestled between towering mountain peaks, concluding at the ‘El Parque’ station within the Tierra del Fuego National Park.
At the intermediate ‘Cascada de la Macarena’ station, the train makes a brief 15-minute halt, allowing passengers to explore an observation deck or delve into the history and culture of the local population of Tierra del Fuego.
