Adelaide Airport (IATA: ADL, ICAO: YPAD) is the main international and domestic gateway to Adelaide, the capital of South Australia. Conveniently located just 7 kilometers west of the city center, the airport sits along the shores of Saint Vincent Gulf near West Beach. It is the fifth busiest airport in Australia, serving around 8.5 million passengers each year.
The airport officially opened on February 16, 1955, replacing the older Parafield Airport, which could no longer keep up with the growing demands of air travel. Since then, Adelaide Airport has played a vital role in connecting South Australia with destinations across the country and around the world.
A major milestone in the airportโs history came in 2005, when a modern terminal was inaugurated on October 7. This redevelopment, costing approximately A$260 million, transformed the airport into a state-of-the-art facility. The terminal can handle up to 27 aircraft at the same time and process as many as 3,000 passengers per hour, significantly boosting the airportโs capacity and efficiency.
Today, Adelaide Airport offers a wide range of services, including international and domestic flights, shopping and dining facilities, car rentals, and convenient transport links into the city. It is a key hub for both business and leisure travelers, as well as a gateway to South Australiaโs famous wine regions, pristine beaches, and cultural attractions.
