The Bay of Fires is a stunning stretch of coastline on the northeast shore of Tasmania β an island state located about 240 km (150 miles) south of mainland Australia. Famous for its dazzling white-sand beaches, crystal-clear turquoise waters, and granite boulders covered in vibrant orange lichen, the bay extends for roughly 50 km (31 miles) along the Tasman Sea, from Binalong Bay to Eddystone Point.
The name Bay of Fires was given by Captain Tobias Furneaux in 1773 after he spotted numerous Aboriginal campfires along the coast. Today, the area is a favorite destination for swimming, diving, snorkeling, kayaking, and hiking. Visitors can explore its many coves and beaches while enjoying the solitude and unspoiled beauty of the Tasmanian coast. Located about 10 km (6 miles) northeast of St Helens, the largest town in the region, Binalong Bay is easily accessible via Binalong Bay Road, which connects the village to Tasmaniaβs main road network.
