The Sydney Opera House is one of the most iconic landmarks in Australia and a true symbol of Sydney. Sitting on Bennelong Point, a small peninsula in Sydney Harbour, it is perfectly placed between the Royal Botanic Gardens and the busy Central Business District. Thanks to its location, the Opera House can be admired from the water and from many spots across the city, making it a highlight of Sydneyโ€™s skyline. Together with the Harbour Bridge, it forms the most famous view of Sydney.

Construction began in 1959 and took 14 years to complete. Designed by Danish architect Jรธrn Utzon, the Opera House officially opened on October 20, 1973, in a ceremony attended by Queen Elizabeth II. The celebration included Beethovenโ€™s Ninth Symphony and a spectacular fireworks show. Its unique roof design, which looks like giant white sails or seashells, has made it one of the most recognizable buildings in the world. The structure rests on hundreds of concrete piles sunk deep into the harbour, and its roof is covered with more than a million shiny ceramic tiles. In 2007, it was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list.

Today, the Opera House is not just a beautiful building but also a vibrant cultural center. Inside are several venues, including the grand Concert Hall with nearly 2,700 seats, an Opera Theatre, a Drama Theatre, and a Studio Theatre. Each year, more than 1.5 million people attend performances ranging from opera and ballet to concerts, plays, and exhibitions. Visitors can also enjoy fine dining at Bennelong restaurant, which offers stunning views of the harbour. Whether seen up close or from afar, the Sydney Opera House remains one of the greatest treasures of Australia.
