Forster is a seaside town located in New South Wales, on the eastern coast of Australia. It sits on Cape Hawke, just north of Wallis Lake — a large coastal lagoon covering about 80 square kilometers. The town is about 305 kilometers (roughly a 3.5-hour drive) north of Sydney. The nearest airport is in Newcastle, about two hours away, with regular flights to Australia’s major cities.

The town was named after William Forster, the fourth Premier of New South Wales. Originally home to Indigenous communities, European settlement began in the mid-19th century. Forster grew thanks to fishing, logging, and tourism. Today, the town has around 14,000 residents, and together with neighboring Tuncurry, it forms the Forster–Tuncurry area, home to over 20,000 people. The local economy still relies heavily on tourism, fishing, and retail.

One of Forster’s highlights is Wallis Lake, a popular destination for fishing, swimming, surfing, and snorkeling. The town is also famous for its pristine sandy beaches, including Seven Mile Beach and Pebbly Beach. Another must-see is Bennetts Head Lookout, offering sweeping ocean and coastal views.

Forster enjoys a mild, temperate climate with warm summers and mild winters. From December to February, average temperatures range from 18°C to 27°C (64°F to 81°F), while in winter (June to August) they range from 7°C to 19°C (45°F to 66°F). Most rainfall occurs between January and June, keeping the region lush and green year-round.
