Lamu is considered the oldest continuously inhabited town in Kenya, with a history dating back to the 12th century. Over the centuries, it became a key hub of trade, culture, and education during the peak of the Swahili civilization. From the 17th to the 19th century, Lamu was under the rule of the Omani Sultanate, becoming a cultural and intellectual center of East Africa. Later, the town came under the control of Zanzibar and subsequently the British Empire. After Kenya gained independence in 1963, Lamu retained its unique architecture and traditional way of life.
The local economy is based on fishing, agriculture, and tourism. Lamu is recognized by UNESCO for its authentic architecture and cultural significance. Its architecture reflects a blend of Arab, Indian, Persian, and European influences. Key attractions include the Old Town of Lamu with narrow streets and traditional stone houses, Lamu Fort built in the early 19th century, and the Lamu Museum, dedicated to the regionโs history. On the nearby island of Manda are the ruins of Takwa, a medieval Swahili settlement dating from the 15thโ17th centuries.
