The Namib Desert is a coastal desert in southwestern Africa, covering about 100,000 square kilometers. It lies mainly within Namibia, with small portions extending into southern Angola and northwestern South Africa. The name โ€œNamibโ€ comes from the language of the Nama people and means โ€œvast place of nothingness. Formed over 80 million years ago under the influence of the cold Benguela Currentโ€”dating back to the time of the dinosaursโ€”the Namib is considered one of the oldest deserts in the world.

The Namib is also one of the driest places on Earth, receiving only about 10โ€“13 millimeters (0.4โ€“0.5 inches) of rainfall per year. Rich deposits of diamonds, tungsten, and uranium have made the region an important center for mining. The cold Atlantic waters along the Namib coast teem with fish, seabirds, and seals, while African penguins inhabit nearby coastal areas. Through the live webcam, you can watch a watering hole in the Namib Desert, where antelopes, zebras, giraffes, ostriches, elephants, rhinos, lions, hyenas, jackals, and other savanna animals come to drink.
