Etosha National Park is one of Africaโs most famous wildlife reserves, located in northwestern Namibia. Its main feature is the vast Etosha Pan โ a massive salt flat that covers about 22% of the parkโs total area and is visible even from space. The park spans approximately 22,270 square kilometers and is home to more than 114 species of mammals, 340 species of birds, 110 species of reptiles, and many other forms of wildlife. The name โEtoshaโ comes from the Oshiwambo language and translates to โGreat White Place,โ reflecting the salt-rich landscape of the region. The park features a variety of ecosystems, including shrub savannas and open grass plains.
The Okaukuejo Waterhole is one of the parkโs most famous attractions. It is illuminated at night, allowing guests of the nearby camp to watch wildlife after dark. A wide range of animals gather here, including elephants, giraffes, rhinos, lions, and numerous species of antelope and birds. During the dry season โ especially from May to September โ the waterhole becomes a vital water source for many animals, making it one of the best places to observe Namibiaโs wildlife.
Okaukuejo Camp, located right next to the waterhole, offers a wide range of accommodations โ from budget campsites to comfortable chalets. The camp also features a restaurant, swimming pool, and souvenir shop. It serves as the main base for safaris throughout Etosha National Park. The best time to visit Etosha National Park is during the dry season (May to September), when wildlife congregates around water sources. However, for bird enthusiasts, the rainy season from November to March is ideal, as many migratory bird species arrive in the park.
Etosha National Park can be reached by car from Namibiaโs capital and largest city, Windhoek, which is home to Hosea Kutako International Airport. Organized transfers and guided tours are also available through travel companies.
