Bacalar Lagoon, also known as the “Lagoon of Seven Colors” (Laguna de los Siete Colores), is a natural wonder located in the southern part of the Mexican state of Quintana Roo, approximately 40 km (25 miles) north of Chetumal, the state capital. This unique lagoon is famous for its crystal-clear waters that shimmer in shades of blue, turquoise, and green, caused by varying water depths, minerals, and the composition of the lagoon’s bottom.

The lagoon stretches approximately 55 km (34 miles) in length and about 2 km (1.2 miles) in width, making it one of the largest freshwater lagoons in Mexico. Its surroundings are considered an ecological paradise, combining natural beauty, biodiversity, and geological features that attract tourists, environmentalists, and researchers from around the world.

Bacalar Lagoon is especially unique because of its ecosystem. It is home to stromatolites — some of the oldest forms of life on Earth, dating back more than 3.5 billion years. These structures are colonies of cyanobacteria capable of producing oxygen and play a vital role in maintaining the lagoon’s ecosystem. The water is mineral-rich and is believed to have therapeutic properties. The lagoon is surrounded by tropical forest, inhabited by numerous species of birds, fish, and other wildlife, including rare and endemic species.

Key attractions in the area include the Fort of San Felipe (Fuerte de San Felipe), built in 1729 to defend against pirate attacks, and the Pirate Channel (Canal de los Piratas), historically used by pirates to navigate inland. Today, popular activities include kayaking, boat tours, and paddleboarding, allowing visitors to explore the lagoon and learn about its unique ecosystem.
