The Pedro Miguel Locks are one of the three main lock systems of the Panama Canal, playing a critical role in lifting and lowering ships between Pacific Ocean sea level and Gatun Lake. Located on the Pacific side of the canal, the locks sit between the Miraflores Locks and Gatun Lake, forming a key transition point for vessels crossing the Isthmus of Panama. Their operation is essential for ensuring the safe, efficient, and continuous flow of global maritime traffic through the canal.

The Pedro Miguel Locks feature a single-step lock system that raises or lowers ships by approximately 9 meters (29 feet), allowing vessels to move between the Pacific Ocean and Miraflores Lake. Each lock chamber measures about 110 meters (361 feet) wide and 305 meters (1,001 feet) long, accommodating large ocean-going cargo ships. The system includes two parallel chambers (east and west), enabling simultaneous two-way traffic or increased capacity in a single direction, depending on transit demand. This design significantly enhances operational flexibility and traffic efficiency.

On August 15, 1914, the steamship S.S. Ancon became the first official vessel to transit the Panama Canal, passing through the Pedro Miguel Locks and marking the canalโ€™s historic opening. Today, the locks remain a vital component of one of the worldโ€™s most important shipping routes, connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Continuous upgrades, modernization, and maintenance ensure the Pedro Miguel Locks meet modern navigation standards, supporting the Panama Canalโ€™s role as a cornerstone of global trade and maritime logistics.
