Puerto Plata (Spanish: Puerto Plata) is a coastal city and municipality on the northern coast of the Dominican Republic, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. It lies at the northern foothills of Mount Isabel de Torres, approximately 235 kilometers (about 146 miles) north of the nation’s capital, Santo Domingo. Founded in 1496 by Bartolomé Columbus, the brother of Christopher Columbus, Puerto Plata is one of the oldest European settlements in the Americas. The name Puerto Plata, meaning “Silver Port,” is commonly linked to the silvery glow of Mount Isabel de Torres rising above the city.

Visitors can reach the summit via the Teleférico de Puerto Plata, the only cable car system in the Caribbean. The cable car line stretches 2,730 meters (approximately 8,957 feet), traveling at a speed of 8 meters per second (about 26 feet per second). The journey takes around 7 minutes and offers stunning panoramic views of the city, the Atlantic coastline, and the surrounding tropical landscapes.

At the summit lies Isabel de Torres National Park, a popular attraction in Puerto Plata featuring a lush botanical garden with diverse tropical vegetation. One of the park’s highlights is the Christ the Redeemer statue, reminiscent of the famous landmark in Rio de Janeiro.
