Karen Mogensen Reserve is a private nature reserve on the Nicoya Peninsula in Puntarenas Province, Costa Rica. Managed by the local environmental organization ASEPALECO, with support from international partners and conservation foundations, the reserve spans approximately 960 hectares (2,373 acres) on the central southern slopes of the peninsula, near the communities of Río Blanco and Jicaral.

The reserve’s conservation efforts began in the early 1990s after decades of deforestation in the 1960s and 1970s, when large areas were converted into cattle pastures, causing severe soil erosion and ecosystem loss. To restore the natural environment, ASEPALECO, in partnership with European non-profit organizations, started acquiring land and reforesting the area. Today, the reserve is named in honor of Karen Mogensen, a dedicated conservation activist, and serves as a critical hub for biodiversity protection and freshwater conservation.

Situated in a transitional zone between dry tropical forests and moist montane ecosystems, the reserve ranges in elevation from 100 to 700 meters (330–2,300 feet) above sea level. It contains patches of primary and secondary forest, providing essential habitats for birds, mammals, insects, and tropical plants. Several rare and vulnerable species thrive here, making the reserve a vital destination for wildlife preservation and eco-tourism.

In addition to its biodiversity, Karen Mogensen Reserve plays a crucial role in safeguarding freshwater sources, ensuring clean water for nearby communities.
