The Mackinac Bridge is one of the most famous and visually striking suspension bridges in the United States. With a total length of approximately 8 kilometers (about 5 miles), the Mackinac Bridge ranks among the longest suspension bridges in North America. Its main span measures 1,158 meters (3,800 feet). Opened to traffic in 1957, it was the longest suspension bridge in the Western Hemisphere at the time and remains a remarkable achievement of mid-20th-century engineering.

The bridge carries Interstate 75 (I-75), a key transportation route connecting the Great Lakes region with the southern United States. It features four traffic lanes and stays open year-round, even during severe winter weather, making it a vital link for both local traffic and long-distance travel.

Beyond its practical role, the Mackinac Bridge is also a major cultural landmark. Each year on Labor Day, it hosts a traditional pedestrian bridge walk, during which thousands of people cross the bridge on foot, enjoying panoramic views of the Straits and celebrating one of Michigan’s most iconic symbols.
