The Statue of Liberty is one of New York City’s most iconic landmarks and one of the most recognizable monuments in the world. The statue was gifted to the United States by France in 1886 to commemorate the centennial of the U.S. Declaration of Independence and to symbolize freedom, democracy, and friendship between nations. From the base to the tip of the torch, the monument rises 93 m (305 ft) high. The female figure of Liberty holds a torch in one hand and a tablet in the other, inscribed with the date July 4, 1776. The statue’s steel framework weighs about 125 tons, while the total weight—including the pedestal—exceeds 200 tons.

Today, the Statue of Liberty is one of New York’s most visited attractions, welcoming millions of visitors each year. Tourists can explore Liberty Island, visit the Statue of Liberty Museum, and—by reservation—climb to the crown’s observation deck, which offers panoramic views of Manhattan, New York Harbor, and the surrounding waterways.

Access to the statue is limited and requires advance ticket reservations, especially for crown entry. Visitors reach Liberty Island exclusively via Statue Cruises ferries, departing from Battery Park in Manhattan and Liberty State Park in New Jersey. Just nearby is Ellis Island, a historic immigration center that once served as the gateway for millions of newcomers to the United States in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
