Fallingwater is one of the most iconic architectural landmarks in the United States and a masterpiece by renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright. This famous house-museum is located in the Laurel Highlands mountains of southwestern Pennsylvania, near the village of Mill Run, approximately 110 km (68 miles) southeast of Pittsburgh. Built in 1935 as a country residence for industrialist Edgar J. Kaufmann and his family, it remains a symbol of innovative design and harmony with nature.
The houseโs most remarkable feature is that it is partially constructed over a waterfall on Bear Run Creek. This design incorporates the sound and movement of water into the living space, reflecting Wrightโs philosophy of organic architecture, where building and nature exist in harmony. The main house was completed between 1936 and 1938, with the guest house and additional structures finished in 1939. Local materials were used, making the house appear as though it naturally โgrowsโ from the surrounding rock and forest.
Today, Fallingwater operates as a museum and is one of Pennsylvaniaโs most visited attractions. In 2019, it was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its outstanding 20th-century architecture. Visitors can enjoy walking trails in the Bear Run Nature Reserve, explore the original interiors and furniture, and admire the forested landscape that surrounds the estate.
