Phoenix is the capital and largest city of Arizona and the county seat of Maricopa County. Located in the “Valley of the Sun” in the southeastern part of the state, Phoenix lies in the central Sonoran Desert, surrounded by low mountain ranges and hills. With a population of approximately 1.7 million, it is the fifth-largest city in the United States, after New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Houston. Covering roughly 1,344 km² (519 mi²), Phoenix is also one of the largest U.S. cities by land area, offering a unique combination of urban living and expansive desert landscapes.

Phoenix has a hot desert climate, with extremely hot, dry summers and mild, relatively warm winters. Summer temperatures frequently reach 38–43°C (100–109°F), while winter days are comfortable, ranging from +15 to +20°C (59–68°F), with cold nights being rare. Precipitation is minimal and mostly occurs during the winter months and the summer monsoon season, keeping both the natural environment and cityscape arid for most of the year.

The city offers an array of recreational, sightseeing, and tourism opportunities, from cultural landmarks to natural desert adventures. Top Phoenix attractions include the historic Orpheum Theater (opened in 1929), the Phoenix Zoo, Papago Park, the surrounding Sonoran Desert, and South Mountain Park and Preserve, featuring extensive hiking trails and Dobbins Lookout, which offers stunning panoramic views of the city and valley. Visitors are drawn to Phoenix for its desert landscapes, vibrant urban life, and year-round warm climate.
